Field Marks: 12.5 in. A large, abundant blackbird of parks, gardens, and a variety of open habitats, including fields and marshes. Often seen walking across lawns on stocky legs with deliberate strides. Highly gregarious, noisy, and conspicuous, forming large flocks. All plumages large, with a relatively heavy, long bill and a long wedge-shaped tail. Adults are black, washed with a strong metallic sheen and a yellow eye. Juveniles are flat grayish-brown with dark eyes. Most common call a loud "clack"; also produces various loud squeaky notes like rusty hinges.
Range: Breeds from ne. British Columbia to sw. Newfoundland and south to central Colorado, s. Texas, and Florida. Winters from s. Minnesota and s. New England south to e. Texas and Florida.
